So there is a special rest still waiting for the people of God. For all who have entered into God’s rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world. So let us do our best to enter that rest.
Hebrews 4:9-11 New Living Translation (NLT)
Happy Labor Day! The calendar grants us this day of rest from our labors every year. Many will enjoy this day off from work. God designates a day every week and "there remaineth a rest" for His people beyond our toil and labor in this world. He, who does not sleep or slumber, bids us to rest because He knows the needs of His Creation. To show us how to do this, God rested on the Sabbath after creating the world and commands us to remember and keep it holy (Exodus 20:8). Jesus clarified that this day was made for us and not the other way around (Mark 2:27) so that good works could continue even as we rest.
We get tired and weary from our work. Even those who don't have jobs have work to do each day that requires rest and renewal to be continued effectively. A daily grind is just that! It has been said that work we enjoy is not really work. Yet, God Himself, after creating the world and all that is within it, encouraged us to rest and take time to reflect and give thanks for how He blesses us each day. The rest spoken of in these verses of Hebrews is eternal. This is the rest of those who believe who have transitioned from life in this world. Let us begin today to learn to rest in God's care every day as we live to enter the "special rest" that awaits us in His Kingdom.
"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
Matthew 11:28 NKJV
