Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
Colossians 3:12-14NIV
Looking out for number one is a great sentiment when we acknowledge that we, in and of ourselves, are not number one. The Word of God calls for people of the faith to be kind and compassionate and gentle. Not often do we need to be told to be these things to ourselves. It is other people God tells us to bear with and forgive. It is to others we are to show patience and humility. It is to one another we are commanded to give love. It is true that loving and forgiving ourselves is important to our own self esteem. However, as we look out for ourselves, we need to remember that, according to Jesus, God is number one and other people are number two. It is God who looks down the list to bless number three. As God's chosen people, that's who we are and how we line up. The great thing about this is that if we all do our part, we move up to the number two spot!
