The Heart

See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. We have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original conviction firmly to the very end. As has just been said:

“Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.”

Hebrews 3:12-18 New International Version (NIV)

We sometimes have a heart problem. If it's healthy, it beats with a normal rhythm pumping blood throughout our bodies and keeps us alive. But it can perform its physical function while being oblivious to its Creator's desires. It can be sinful, unbelieving and hard. So while keeping us alive, it can still be the cause of our demise. Filling our hearts with love through the Holy Spirit will give us life beyond how well it seems to be functioning through a doctor's stethoscope.

We are told in God's Word to encourage each other daily as long as it is called "Today." That, my friends, means every day we are blessed with life. So, if we are fortunate enough to hear God's voice speaking to our hearts "today," let's keep our hearts soft, supple and loving. This is a requirement in God's Word in order for us to receive everlasting life even after what appears to be a healthy heart stops beating.

And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart. Ezekiel 36:26 NLT
