Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
Philippians 2:3-4 NIV
Paul instructs us in this Scripture to live out what Jesus Christ called one of the greatest commandments, second only to loving God (Matthew 22:39). It takes love to show concern for others first — to care more about the interests of others before our own. It takes humility to step back and allow another to take front and center in this world. In some cases, we are told to first prepare ourselves in order to be able to help somebody else. However, it is often selfishness or conceit that provoke us to desire to be in first place at the expense of another. This is yet another condition of our hearts being revealed to the God who gave His only begotten Son to save us from the certain death of sin, delivering us to everlasting life by His blood. No, we are not Jesus, but if we call ourselves Christians we are proclaiming to try to be "Christ-like" in our endeavors. And it is He who said the first will be last and the last will be first. So, maybe the question is: Do we want to be in first place in this world or first place in our Savior's heart?
But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.
Matthew 19:30 NIV
