Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 5:15-20 New International Version (NIV)
Caution signs are meant to warn us that danger is imminent. When we are wise, we take note of these indications to practice care when proceeding in this direction. God's Word presents us with many warnings to live careful lives. However, as we go our own way, there are some things we do that lure us from under the umbrella of God's protective care. Although He never leaves or forsakes us, He does tell us to be alert and discerning in this world. How often we find ourselves calling out for His help when we venture out and disobey His commands!
We are also instructed to be careful internally as well as externally. Living right and loving others in ways that please God are just as important to our safety as obeying warning signs along the paths we journey. As we fight the good fight of faith, we must remember that following Christ means trusting God to help us to avoid the evil that lurks in this dark world seeking the chance to hinder our progress to the Kingdom of God. We must also guard our hearts from the evil that will try its best to slip in there too.
Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Romans 12:17-18 NIV
