The rainbow that I have put in the sky will be my sign to you and to every living creature on earth. It will remind you that I will keep this promise forever. When I send clouds over the earth, and a rainbow appears in the sky, I will remember my promise to you and to all other living creatures. Never again will I let floodwaters destroy all life. When I see the rainbow in the sky, I will always remember the promise that I have made to every living creature. The rainbow will be the sign of that solemn promise.
Genesis 9:12-17 Contemporary English Version (CEV)
The beauty seen in a rainbow that appears above us goes beyond the array of colors we view formed together in a lovely arc stretching across the sky. Often a rainbow appears after the rain or during the rain when the sun comes out to shine. Sometimes we even get to witness a double rainbow! This miracle of God cannot be explained even as some try to give a reason. However, God explains it clearly in His Word. That rainbow is God's reminder of His promise to us.
God has demonstrated His power over Creation in many ways. As we look at His work in nature and the magnificence of the planet on which we live, Scripture states that we are without excuse for not believing in the divine nature of God (Romans 1:20) who created everything. The Word of God encourages us to meditate on pure and lovely things. We are told to keep our thoughts on things that are excellent and praiseworthy. It is this that keeps us from being anxious in this fallen world. It is this that helps us remember the promises of God when there is no rainbow in the sky.
The treasure of the rainbow is not at the end of it where the mythical pot of gold is said to be. The treasure is in the promise the rainbow represents. Our Sovereign God has done much more for us since He put that first rainbow in the sky and He has made and kept other promises of His Word. And He's not done yet. He promises forever in His Kingdom where there will be no need for reminders of who He is and what He can do, as we follow His Son, Jesus, to His Throne. Glory!
