Belonging to Jesus

My little children, I am telling you this so that you will stay away from sin.  But if you sin, there is someone to plead for you before the Father. His name is Jesus Christ, the one who is all that is good and who pleases God completely.  He is the one who took God’s wrath against our sins upon himself and brought us into fellowship with God; and he is the forgiveness for our sins, and not only ours but all the world’s.

And how can we be sure that we belong to him?  By looking within ourselves:  are we really trying to do what he wants us to?

Dear brothers, I am not writing out a new rule for you to obey, for it is an old one you have always had, right from the start.  You have heard it all before.  Yet it is always new, and works for you just as it did for Christ; and as we obey this commandment, to love one another, the darkness in our lives disappears and the new light of life in Christ shines in.

1 John 2:1-3, 7-8 Living Bible (TLB)

Have you ever heard someone dismiss a transgression by saying "I am not Jesus"?  Far too often, we fall back from giving love and forgiveness to others but still claim God's grace for ourselves.  Those who believe in Christ have a Savior who intercedes before God on our behalf.  Jesus gave His life to give us this gift.  Because of what He did, we are not called to die for our sin because He did it once and for all.  Surely, we can try to walk in His ways!

Being a Christian means we belong to Jesus and those who call Him Savior must seek to obey His commands, confess when we don't, and trust in His help to change.  We all fall short of His glory for only He is the Righteous One; but He stood in our place and took the punishment for our sin.  He gave us the chance to receive the blessings of God instead of the wrath of God.  He redeemed and reconciled us, destroying the barrier that separated us from our Heavenly Father.

No, we are not Jesus because Jesus never sinned and we do.  Christ Jesus gave His life in exchange for our forgiveness of sin and He daily lavishes us with love to demonstrate to us how to love each other.  Let's walk in His light and try to be like Him if we are claiming Him as our Savior.  The Good News is that we can all be like Jesus because He went to that Cross for all who would believe that He is the Son of God and He left instructions on exactly what to do in His Word.

I love the Lord for He heard my cry and pitied every groan.
