What We Get

But when the time came for the kindness and love of God our Savior to appear, then he saved us — not because we were good enough to be saved but because of his kindness and pity — by washing away our sins and giving us the new joy of the indwelling Holy Spirit, whom he poured out upon us with wonderful fullness — and all because of what Jesus Christ our Savior did so that he could declare us good in God’s eyes — all because of his great kindness; and now we can share in the wealth of the eternal life he gives us, and we are eagerly looking forward to receiving it.  These things I have told you are all true.  Insist on them so that Christians will be careful to do good deeds all the time, for this is not only right, but it brings results.

Titus 3:4-8 Living Bible (TLB)

Mercy is what we get when we are deserving of something worse.  Grace is what we get when we could have gotten something else we didn't really want.  Favor is what we get when God blesses us with His goodness by providing for our needs or a desire of our hearts according to His will.  In God's kindness and love, He gives us all three.  It took a lot for Him to make this possible for people like us and He demonstrates just how much it took by giving us His Son, Jesus Christ.

We did nothing to deserve God's love but He gave it first because He is merciful.  Through Christ, we are declared deserving as we declare Him as our Savior.  Through Christ, we are given sufficient grace to help us in our times of need and promised an eternal future with Him.  Through Christ, we are given the Holy Spirit to guide us through life favorably and blessed as we await the return of our Savior.  Those who believe eagerly await all the promises God has made to give us eternal peace, joy and love, with no more pain, sorrow or death.

Loving, caring for and serving others while we wait on the Lord honors God's provisions for us, and brings glory to our God.  And it works for our own best interest.  It brings results.  So, if we have trouble doing good deeds for God, maybe we can do good deeds for ourselves in Jesus' name and on His behalf.  As we believe and trust in Christ, God sees His Son in our hearts and has left His Spirit here to help us do His will.  He already knew we would need a Helper.
