I waited patiently for God to help me; then he listened and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out from the bog and the mire, and set my feet on a hard, firm path, and steadied me as I walked along. He has given me a new song to sing, of praises to our God. Now many will hear of the glorious things he did for me, and stand in awe before the Lord, and put their trust in him.
Psalm 40:1-3 Living Bible (TLB)
Patience is a virtue because waiting is hard! The old saying a watched pot never boils isn't really true because if you put it on high heat and watch long enough it will eventually boil right before your eyes. However, your patience may run out while waiting and watching for water to boil because it's basically a waste of time to stand there doing that. We do better leaving it alone while we do something else more productive. That is how it works with our prayers. We make our requests to God and wait for His answer. We grow anxious while waiting and watching to see how God will respond to our prayers. God hears us but we must learn to be patient as we wait on His timing and remember that He is always on time.
When things get rough, we cry out to God for help. He will lift us from our despair and steady our feet. He walks with us and helps us to endure situations that could break us. As we trust in Him, He will even carry us to safe ground and place us on firm foundations. Yet, He sometimes makes us wait because we tend to be more thankful when we have had to wait for a while. When we are thankful, we are more prone to tell somebody how good God is. And this is our great commission. We are to share this Good News with others so that they will know God and put their trust in Him as well. Then they tell somebody else how good God is and they tell somebody else and . . . you get the point. "A new song of praises to our God."
Patiently wait on Him because He is the Creator of time and He loves us. In those who believe, patience produces character and character produces hope (Romans 5:4). We receive our blessings to bring God glory and we are strengthened for His purpose. When we leave our petitions at the feet of our Savior and wait patiently with faith, we can be sure that others will see the glorious things God has done for us as He answers our prayers. Then they will put their trust in Him too. This is just as certain as the water eventually boiling without observation if you leave it on the high heat long enough.
