For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
2 Corinthians 10:3-5 New International Version (NIV)
Many enter into a new year making resolutions to do life differently than before. We pledge to ourselves and others that we will change our way of doing certain things that are not good for us. We set out to eliminate destructive habits that hurt us and initiate constructive regimens that are beneficial to our lives. Sometimes, we even seek to distance ourselves from certain people who, at best, do not contribute to our well-being or, worse, do us harm. These changes will take perseverance to be accomplished. However, we have help through the Holy Spirit as we hold our thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ.
Changing for good is a fight we have with ourselves. Resisting something we want to do, even if it is bad for us, is never easy. The world makes it even harder because we have an enemy prowling around the planet who desires our destruction and failure. In addition to fighting ourselves, we have to fight him too! But God has given us weapons that are not of this world that can knock him off his feet. Through Christ, we have divine power to demolish strongholds. We may have an enemy for now, but we also have a true Best Friend Forever!
As we seek to do better things with our lives this year, we can trust in our God who fights for us and with us and accomplish our goals. We can break the chains that seek to bind us. We can love and help each other to be all God put us here to be. We must not give up! We must hold those thoughts captive to what Christ want us to do, which is always for our good. His strength is made perfect in our weakness.
